What's included?

With TravelStar Trip Cancellation and Interruption insurance, we protect you from unexpected events that can disrupt your travel plans. Events such as these are included:

EventDetails
Emergency Medical Conditions
  • a. you or your travelling companion suffer a medical emergency;
  • b. your or your travelling companion’s spouse, family member, key employee or caregiver are hospitalized; or
  • c. your host is hospitalized at your destination. In the event a medical emergency delays your return to your province/territory of residence you must return on the earliest of:
    • i. the date you are deemed medically fit to travel by the attending physician; or
    • ii. 5 days following the end of your or your travelling companion’s medical emergency or discharge from hospital. 
Pregnancy
  • Complications due to you, your spouse’s, or an immediate family member’s pregnancy (within the first 31 weeks) that prevent or interrupt travel.
  • Unexpected pregnancies after booking a trip that prevent travel (if the expected due date is within 9 weeks of the scheduled date of departure).
Death
  • The death of you, your travel companion, an immediate family member, business partner, key employee, caregiver, or host at your destination that prevents or interrupts travel.
Government Advisories & Visas
  • The Government of Canada issues a travel advisory recommending against travel after you’ve booked a trip to a destination country where there was no global travel advisory announced or in place.
  • The non-issuance of travel visas for reasons beyond your control prevents or delays travel.
Employment & Occupation
  • A business meeting, tradeshow, convention, or training course is cancelled for reason(s) beyond you, your travelling companion or your employer’s control.
  • You or your travelling companion unexpectedly lost your employment after booking a trip.
  • Unexpected transfer by the employers for whole you or your travelling companion work on the booking date which requires relocation of you or tour travelling companion’s principal residence.
  • You or your travelling companion are issued a summons to service incase of reservist, active military, police and fire personnel. 
Travel Supplier Default
  • Travel services are not delivered due to the financial default of your travel supplier.
Delays, Schedule Changes & Misconnections
  • Weather conditions, mechanical failure, traffic accidents, road closures, strike notices, or airline schedule changes delay, prevent, or interrupt travel.
  • A concert, wedding, or other event that is your travel's sole purpose is cancelled.
  • Your Cruise is cancelled prior to the departure of the cruise ship or the reposition of the cruise ship due to weather conditions, earthquakes, or volcanic eruptions.
  • Scheduled medical consultation is cancelled prior to departure when it was scheduled before the booking date and the sole purpose of the trip
Other Risks
  • Trip cancellation by a common carrier due to a strike notice announced by the common carrier for the trip.
  • Principal residence or place of business is made uninhabitable or inoperable as a result of fire, flood, burglary, or natural disaster.
  • Quarantines or hijacked.
  • Required to appear for jury duty, as a defendant in a civil suit or are subpoenaed as a witness.
  • Loss directly or indirectly caused by terrorism.

What's not included?

We take pride in offering you a product that covers many common risks. Cancellations and interruptions caused by things like anticipated events, pre-existing conditions that have not been stable for 180 days, or global travel advisories, and costs paid for with travel credits and vouchers are not covered by Trip Cancellation and Interruption insurance.

Trip delays can be expensive and frustrating. Adding Trip Delay Upgrade to your TravelStar Trip Cancellation and Interruption Insurance helps you make the best of a bad situation.

For travel delays 12 hours of longer, your Trip Delay Upgrade coverage includes: 

  • Out-of-pocket expenses: Up to $500 per day (to a maximum $1,500) for accommodations, meals, necessary telephone calls, Wi-Fi, and taxi or ridesharing costs.  
  • Event tickets: Up to $200 for you to attend a ticketed event like a movie, sporting event, or concert.
  • Rejoin transportation: Extra costs to reunite you with your tour, group, or trip if you haven’t already been returned to your province of residence in Canada because of a change in plans.

Who can buy TravelStar Trip Cancellation and Interruption Insurance?

Anyone can buy trip cancellation insurance if you tick all these boxes:

  • you’re a Canadian resident with a valid provincial/territorial government health plan;
  • you’re buying a plan before leaving on a trip;
  • your destination isn’t under a Government of Canada travel advisory to "avoid non-essential travel" or "avoid all travel";
  • your trip is valued at $20,000 or less; and
  • you’ve answered all our medical questions (for trips valued $12,000 or more). 
How much does Trip Cancellation and Interruption insurance cost?

How does Trip Cancellation and Interruption insurance work?  

Trip Cancellation and Interruption insurance protects the investment you’ve made in your travels. The plan covers several insured risk.
